Abdul kalam ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND TEXT A vul pakir jainulabdeen abdul kalam (1931-2015) was born into a middle-class family in rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. He had an unparalled career as a defence scientist and was also the recipent of the highest civilian award of india, the bharat ratna. As chief of india’s research and development pro gramme, kalam demonstrated the potential for dynamism and innovation that exists in seemingly moribund research establishments. He was nominated as the eleventh president of India in 2002, and was known as the ‘people’s president’.
